Herman "Herm" M. and L. Dianne Reininga

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Through nearly five decades of support for University of Iowa athletics, Herman “Herm” M. (1965 B.S.I.E.) and L. Dianne (1963 B.A.) Reininga have exhibited the kind of Hawkeye loyalty that helps student-athletes excel in the classroom and on the field of play. But their financial contributions are only a piece of their black-and-gold story.

Herm Reininga, of Cedar Rapids, is originally from Cedar Falls. He and Dianne—who is from Muscatine—both graduated from the UI and have held season tickets for football and basketball since the 1960s. As a former Hawkeye wrestling letter winner, Herm understands the many ways in which financial support helps student-athletes realize their athletic and academic dreams.

“Without the mentorship, knowledge and financial support I received from the university, I would have missed many exciting experiences in industry and the public arena,” says Herm Reininga. “I would not have had the opportunity to attend Iowa without an athletics scholarship, I would not have graduated without the mentorship I received. I was provided not only the ability to solve problems but how to predict outcomes, which gave me a competitive advantage throughout my career. Our three children and two of their spouses also attended the university, so giving back is the right thing to do for us.”

The Reiningas’ support for Hawkeye athletics includes the Herm and L. Dianne Reininga Engineering/Athletic Scholarship, which the couple established in 2004. In creating the scholarship fund, the Reiningas hoped to help the UI teach students to be not just well-trained professionals, but also well-rounded individuals able to serve and lead their communities with integrity and vision. The Herm and L. Dianne Reininga Engineering/Athletic Scholarship supports these students as they meet tomorrow’s most difficult challenges and explore its most promising opportunities. The fund is used to support one or more annual athletics scholarships to a deserving UI student-athlete majoring in engineering. The athletics scholarship is in addition to the Herm and Dianne Reininga Scholarship in the UI College of Engineering, which the couple established with a 2001 gift.

In talking about reasons for supporting the UI, Herm Reininga credits his upbringing and his wife’s financial management as reasons for being able to give so generously.

“My grandmother always said to put something in the offering plate on Sunday, and I do,” says Herm. “Dianne is the budget manager at our house, and she finds ways in our budget to support Iowa. It is her direction that determines the amount we provide, and her leadership on finances that has provided the scholarships and support for athletics and the university.”

In addition to their scholarship support, the couple also has given to several important athletics initiatives through the years, including contributions to the facilities campaigns for Kinnick Stadium, Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and the P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Boathouse, among others.

Herm Reininga has been a volunteer leader for a number of boards in the UI College of Engineering, and he currently serves on the Engineering Development Board. He worked at Rockwell Collins International as a senior vice president of operations and a corporate officer after graduation from the UI, and he currently serves as director of the National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa. The Reiningas are members of the Silver Level of the University of Iowa Presidents Club, which recognizes the most generous contributors to all areas of the university.
