For Kevin Wanninger, co-President of the Carroll Area I-Club, providing support for Hawkeye student-athletes is the top reason to contribute to the I-Club. “Serving as president is time consuming, but worth every second,” said Wanninger, an I-Club member of 10 years. “Putting our student-athletes on a level playing field is what drives me to work on building memberships and contributions.”
Wanninger, a Carroll resident, has been a Hawkeye football season ticket holder for over 25 years. He recalls a number of memorable Black and Gold sports moments, but noted a couple favorites, including Rob Houghtlin’s game-winning field goal in No. 1 Iowa’s 12-10 win over No. 2 Michigan in 1985 that propelled Iowa to the Rose Bowl that season. Wanninger also pointed out Warren Holloway’s game-winning touchdown catch as time expired to down LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl.
Wanninger’s enthusiasm for the Hawkeyes on the playing field has resulted in strong support off as well. His support of Iowa athletics has evolved from a season ticket holder into an I-Club president.
“Being the huge Hawkeye fan that I am, I was asked to be on the Carroll Area I-Club’s steering committee,” said Wanninger, on how he originally became involved with the I-Club. “I then became very active in building all of our events.” The University of Iowa graduate has continued to grow I-Club participation and increase memberships in his role as I-Club President.
“We continue to grow event participation and add events to get Hawkeye fans together,” said Wanninger.
The President and Owner of Traffic Builders, Ltd. has a few other goals to increase I-Club support.
“We have 10 counties under our umbrella and we are starting to reach out to the counties that are farther away from Carroll to increase their participation,” said Wanninger. “We are always trying to increase our contributions to the I-Club.”
Wanninger and his fellow Carroll Area I-Club members achieved their goals this year as they increased the chapter’s membership by 26 percent. It marked the second highest percentage growth of any I-Club. Overall, each local I-Club chapter increased its membership.
