Cedar Rapids, Iowa
At the University of Iowa, we have three main areas of athletic fundraising – annual giving, capital project giving, and scholarship support. Kay Pitlik and her late husband Bill have created a legacy in all three areas.
Members of the I-Club for over 40 years, including charter members of the Kinnick Society, the Pitliks have also had football, men’s basketball and wrestling season ticket holders for over 40 years.
They made significant gifts to the campaign to build Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the softball grandstand campaign, the bubble turf replacement, and most recently, the Carver-Hawkeye Arena Renovation Campaign.
The Pitliks have also established six Leadership Level endowed scholarships benefitting football, softball, wrestling, field hockey, and women’s basketball.
Director of Athletics Gary Barta commented that, “Kay and Bill Pitlik are a Hawkeye institution. From their numerous facilities gifts to their long standing Kinnick Society contributions to their significant endowed scholarship giving and continuing through their staunch and steadfast support of our student-athletes and coaches, we are humbled by their involvement, and their generosity. They’ve touched every aspect of Iowa athletics. We are so proud to have known Bill, and very grateful to have Kay continue to be so close to our program.”
Kay has continued their amazing track record of support since Bill’s passing. She is at every home wrestling meet and home football game and has travelled with her family –Team Pitlik - to the NCAA wrestling tournament almost every year since 1995 and to countless bowl games.
“Kay, as a supporter, is almost a fan/coach - if that’s a word. I take what she has to say seriously,” said wrestling coach Tom Brands. “She has high expectations of our program, and so do we, so she can keep those expectations coming. She’s a top notch supporter, as was Bill. She raises the bar for our program.”
In 2012, Kay, and Bill in memorium, were named the Hawk of the Year in celebration of two people who have made a significant impact on Hawkeye Athletics for many decades and continue their tradition of support through several generations of their large and passionate Hawkeye family.
