Making a planned gift to The University of Iowa Foundation does more than secure crucial funds for The University of Iowa. It gives donors the opportunity to ensure that their most heartfelt passions can be advanced through sound financial planning.

Carol Haupert of Ottumwa, Iowa, is just one example. After graduating from the UI in 1978 with a B.S. degree in elementary education, she taught in western Iowa for 13 years. During that time, she also coached high school girls basketball and softball.

Haupert has seen firsthand the ways that participation in athletics can contribute to academic success. And by creating an athletic scholarship at the UI, she’s doing what she can on a personal level to help advance these two important aspects of her life.

“My entire adult life has been dedicated to education and athletics,” explained Haupert, a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan who now works as a public education and teachers’ advocate. “Establishing this scholarship is a perfect marriage of the two things I value most.”

In order to achieve her dream of helping UI student-athletes reach their educational goals, Haupert worked with members of the UI Foundation’s planned giving and athletic development staffs. With their assistance, she established a revocable living trust and arranged for some of her retirement assets to one day be used to create a named, endowed, full-ride football scholarship.

“It’s wonderful to feel assured that no matter what happens to me, my retirement funds will be used in a meaningful and significant way,” Haupert said.

However, Haupert wanted to make a difference right away as well. Because she’s unable to create a full-ride football scholarship until her trust and retirement assets can be transferred to the UI upon her death, she arranged to build on her consistent annual giving to the I-Club with a larger immediate gift so that a named, endowed athletic scholarship could be awarded beginning in the fall of 2004.

“I’ve never been so thrilled and proud to write a check,” she said. “Instead of having an object that will just fade away, I have the honor of really helping someone.”

No matter your life’s passion, The University of Iowa is likely to offer a way to enrich it. And planned giving through the UI Foundation can be your avenue to creatively helping you pass it on to future generations.
