Washington County I-Club Spring Banquet
The Washington County I-Club hosted close to 350 Hawks at their annual I-Club banquet on Monday evening at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. Ten new I-Club members joined during the event and Washington County I-Club President Sid Manfull presented Executive Director of Development, Matt Henderson with a check for $7,500 to support our Athletics program.
Mac McCausland, frequent analyst on Hawkeye Mediacom broadcasts, former Hawkeye basketball player and father of former Hawkeye great Kent McCausland emceed the evening’s program which featured Fran McCaffery, Tom Brands, Norm Parker, and Shannon Gage.
Shannon Gage reported that women’s basketball’s incoming recruiting class is ranked 11th in the nation and that they are coming off of a 22-9 season, their best since the 1995-’96 season.
Wrestling coach Tom Brands ripped his shirt right open with buttons flying everywhere in an effort to elicit more excitement from the crowd – the performance did so, and can be viewed at www.jointheiclub.com. Brands also talked about rivalries and how his team doesn’t have the luxury of choosing its rivals. He said “we are everyone’s rivalry match”.
Football Defensive Coordinator Norm Parker had the opportunity to praise former Hawkeye players Matt Kroul, Josh Koeppel, and Mike Humpal who were in attendance. Parker expressed what great, hardworking players they were, “just all around good Iowa guys, and I love them”.
Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery said he now feels better about where the team is headed, recalling that at this time last year, he didn’t really know yet what he had. He expects a physically stronger team next season with good depth. “I can promise you this,” he said, “we are going to run, we are going to defend and - it’s only going to get better.”
Manfull who organized the evening’s event was pleased not only with the turnout, but the money raised from the dozen live auction items with proceeds going back to Iowa Athletics.
