Tom and Jeanette Schierbrock
Council Bluffs, IA
Since first calling Council Bluffs, Iowa home more than 35 years ago as a couple, Dr. Tom and Jeanette Schierbrock have been integral individuals in their community—through their professional work, as well as their volunteer efforts. While Dr. Tom Schierbrock started his own dental practice, Bluffs Family Dentistry, in 1978, Jeanette Schierbrock worked for the Council Bluffs Community Schools for numerous years.
Their passion for volunteering started long before their professional days. For Tom Schierbrock, it started while growing up as a Boy Scout. For Jeanette Schierbrock, it was her involvement with 4-H. Today, they both volunteer for very simplistic reasons.
“Why not?” said Dr. Tom Schierbrock (1970 B.S., 1974 D.D.S.), a native of West Point, Iowa.
“It’s what you’re supposed to do,” said Jeanette Schierbrock (1972 B.A. 1972), a Council Bluffs native.
It’s with that attitude—and commitment—that the Schierbrocks have been making a difference. Within the Council Bluffs area, the couple has been involved in Boy Scouts of America, Children’s Square USA, and RAGBRAI, amongst others, as well as helping create the Southwest Iowa Nature Trail. In recognition of their work with Children’s Square USA, which has been serving the needs of children and families in Council Bluffs since 1882, the Schierbrocks received the Jason Award. Jason Award recipients demonstrate an extraordinary degree of caring, contribution, and commitment to children, families, communities, and related causes.
“We were quite honored by the award,” said Dr. Tom Schierbrock. “We think it’s very important recognition for those who have made a difference in kids’ lives, and we’d like to think we’ve done that a little bit.”
Through the University of Iowa—whether it’s the National I-Club, the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA), or the Nile Kinnick I-Club in Council Bluffs—the Schierbrocks continue to be strong supporters of the black and gold. Dr. Tom Schierbrock—who was named 2014 Dental Alumnus of the Year from the UI College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics—led the National I-Club as board president from 2013-2014, served on the UI College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics alumni board, and held a position with the UIAA Board of Directors, while Jeanette Schierbrock is currently on the UIAA Board of Directors and has been a UIAA volunteer alumni counselor at college fairs. The Schierbrocks also have been season ticket holders for basketball, football, and wrestling since 1978.
“The University of Iowa gave us both the opportunity for a good education and good careers,” said Dr. Tom Schierbrock. “We believe in what the university is trying to accomplish. It’s a valuable asset for the state of Iowa, and we just want to do whatever small part we can to make it continue to be accessible.”
The Schierbrocks, who have financially supported the University of Iowa for 35 years, recently finalized plans to establish permanent endowed scholarships for both the UI College of Dentistry and the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics: the Schierbrock Family Athletic Scholarship and the Schierbrock Family Dental Scholarship.
“This was something we felt would further benefit the University of Iowa,” Dr. Tom Schierbrock said. “We hope it benefits future students and student-athletes.”
For the Schierbrocks, the University of Iowa and the community of Iowa City will always bring back fond memories. The couple met at a get-together for Jeanette Schierbrock’s sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, and their son, William Schierbrock (2007 B.S.) met his wife, Catherine Hileman Schierbrock (2011 M.D.), in Iowa City.
“I always enjoy coming back to Iowa City,” said Jeanette Schierbrock. “There are so many memories, and it’s a major reason why we continue to support the university. It’s the right thing to do.”
